I have a fine arts background and have been teaching art for 20 years including 9 years at the National Gallery of Canada. It has always been apparent to me how art and health have been related. Growing up with a father who was a physician we had many discussions about the 'merits' of art versus the obvious benefits of the health care profession. The lines now are beginning to blur as currently I teach interns from the University of Ottawa's Family Medicine Dept on the benefits of looking at art to develop a more humanitarian approach with their patients. This is one of the examples of a new movement that I am excited to be part of. I developed my company The Art of Being Human (www.theartofbeinghuman.ca) as a result of how I feel about the benefits that engaging in art activity can provide for the well being of the individual and society as a whole.
